		<description>I've long been enamored with the Victorian hand-drawn gaslight style, with all its excessive ornamentation, faux-dimensionality and an over-abundance of clashing colors that just seem to fit together so perfectly in a happy, manic way. 

I hand-drew these two cards with just a black micron pen, scanned and digitized them, and after a minimal amount of vector polishing and font use, I experimented with a bunch of different color variations until I arrived at four distinct palettes per card. 

The final cards are bright, cozy and winter-inspired though not Christmas-specific, not only so they're appropriate for celebrators of all persuasions but also because I feel there are so many fun wintery combos besides your traditional red-and-green (though I couldn't help but include a couple of those, too.) A few were inspired by the sensation of walking through the nighttime snow towards a warm yellow window in the distance, or the bliss of sipping hot-chocolate on a gaudy 50s couch at your grandma's house. 

While these were a purely for-fun exercise, half the fun was making the cards themselves. They were printed on nice matte paper on my Epson, and cut/scored/folded by hand. They are about 4.625" x 7", and come with cream 5"x7" envelopes.  If you are interested in purchasing any, they are for sale in my etsy shop.

		<description>Ever month or so I meet with a few fellow beer enthusiasts for our brew club; we each bring a big bottle of something special and discuss (but mostly, drink!) We are thinking about having some custom-engraved beer glasses made eventually, and you know what that means-- logo mark! 

I have two options at this point; the first is inspired by a Medieval heraldic crest, with simple Art Deco lines that bring it its two-dimensional retro styling, popular in the current craft beer revival.

I have this distressing problem where I occasionally wake up and think, "I know, I'll make a pattern brush today!" Somehow I always forget how maddeningly difficult this seemingly simple design task can be. Well, 2 1/2 hours later, here is my pattern brush-- by the time I was done, I hardly had time to think (or care) about color choice, so I'll leave refining that for another day... maybe.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the death of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and my long-time favorite. Monogram 2: Muset
A muset is "a small hole or gap through which a wild animal passes," or a hiding place. The ribbon passing through the pentagon hints at this meaning, though functionally it is there to add balance and bring the mark's center of gravity down to its base. I doubt many people have heard this word or definition, but I like the idea of having a hidden concept that adds extra value when it is known but isn't necessary for success of the mark aesthetically.

		<description>Final poster for Scardello's 2011 Tour de Fromage competition!

This poster, inspired by the ornate "Gaslight" style of Victorian ephemera, was almost entirely hand-illustrated, with only the addition of color and texture achieved in Photoshop.

Tour de Fromage is an annual March Madness-style cheese competition between seven famous cheese making regions. The "playoffs" are rowdy but educational cheese and wine events, where guests vote on their favorites in blind tastings.
